London is less a single city than a collection of villages that grew into each other, which is why walking tours here tend to work by neighbourhood rather than by monument. Westminster, the City, Southwark and the East End each carry a different period of the story.
The fixed points — the Tower, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s, the Changing of the Guard — are worth pre-booking where tickets apply. Beyond them, themed walks on Roman London, the plague and fire, Jack the Ripper or the pub trade fill out a stay. Day trips west of London (Stonehenge, Bath, Windsor) live on their own hub — do not treat this page as that coach.
Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and any skip-the-line ticket sell out first, especially at weekends and in school holidays. Walking tours are more forgiving. Book as soon as your dates are firm if a specific timed entry is the point of the day.
